How to connect: Alfen

Requirements

  • Charger has internet connection

  • Laptop with windows

  • ACE Service Installer

  • UTP cable

Good to know: This guide sets the Plugchoice (or Volt Time Cloud) backoffice preset and installs the matching root certificate. Download the certificate for your preset first: Amazon Root CA for Plugchoice, ISRG Root X1 for Volt Time Cloud.

Connect your charger

Log into your charger

  1. Download ACE Service Installer to your laptop.

  2. Log in with the credentials included with your charger, or try: Username: RadomskiR Password: fazUv6

  3. Connect your laptop to the charger via UTP.

  4. Select your charger in the left-hand side.

  5. Log into the charger using the credentials included with your charger.

Option 1: Plugchoice preset (recommended):

  1. Under Connectivity > General, set Backoffice preset to Plugchoice and Protocol to OCPP 1.6.

  2. Go back to the overview page (the first page) and press Install firmware update.

  3. Select the Amazon Root CA file you downloaded, install it, then reboot the charger.

Option 2: Volt Time Cloud preset (if Option 1 fails):

  1. Under Connectivity > General, set Backoffice preset to Volt Time Cloud and Protocol to OCPP 1.6.

  2. Go back to the overview page and press Install firmware update.

  3. Select the ISRG Root X1 file you downloaded, install it, then reboot the charger.

Find the chargepoint ID

  1. Go to General > General, find Customer Ident. number. By default, this is something like "ACExxxxxxx".

  2. This is the chargepoint ID. Copy it (case sensitive).

Registering your charger in Plugchoice

Done! The charger should come online.

Troubleshooting

Did you set everything up correctly, but the charger still remains "Pre-registered"?

  • Chargepoint ID is wrong (most common). It is case sensitive, so copy the Customer Ident. number (something like "ACExxxxxxx") exactly.

  • Presets are not in the list. If ACE Service Installer only offers Manually or Standalone (no Plugchoice / Volt Time Cloud preset), the presets could not be downloaded. Make sure the laptop has internet and reopen ACE Service Installer. If they still do not appear, configure it manually: under the network profile set Protocol: OCPP 1.6 and the backend URL yourself (wss://ocpp.plugchoice.com<your chargepoint ID>).

  • Certificate error, even after uploading a .fwi. You uploaded the wrong root certificate for your preset. Match them: the Plugchoice preset needs the Amazon Root CA file, the Volt Time Cloud preset needs the ISRG Root X1 file. Install the matching one as a firmware update and reboot.

  • Still not connecting? Use the unsecured connection. As a last resort, set the backend URL to ws://ocpp.plugchoice.com<your chargepoint ID> (port 80 instead of 443). This skips the certificate and is how many Alfen chargers finally come online.
